What would the advantages and disadvantages of such a design be?

Advantage: You won't get your khakis stuck in the chain and all greasy.

Disadvantage: It's less efficient than chain drive.

I'm guessing most here will choose chain drive.

looks heavier than a chain drive, and with less possible gear ratios too.

If the drivetrain is fully sealed, it could make a great rain day commuter bike.
