Shimano Chain Installation Problems(2 posts)

This is the second time I have had a Shimano HG chain fail within the first 50 miles of installing it. Maybe I didn't drive the pin through enough. It appeared fine when I installed it but I admit I could have inspected it a lot closer. This one opened up on the side of the chain opposite the drive pin of the chain tool. It didn't break clear through but wrapped up in my DuraAce derailleur and bent it into a shape I never thought possible. Has anyone had similar experiences? Any advice for making sure it doesn't happen again?

1) There are two sizes of pins: 8spd type and 9spd type. (I assume you have used the pin that originally came with the chain, so this should not be the Problem?)

2) Make sure that the pin juts out slightly (equally) on both sides.

3) If you don't trust common chain tools anymore: Ask your LBS if he owns a "Rohloff Revolver" (comparatively expensive pro tool which widens the ends of the pin by high pressure).

4) Try a SRAM chain (can be assembled without any tool).
