Went to Vegas and the Canyon. Past this dude a few times and managed to get a picture while I was driving past him on Hoover dam. It is a 4 seat bike that looks like a lot of fun. Glad I did not drive off the dam while trying to take a photo for you bums.
probably pretty fastishmael

all those legs on one machine. How fast are recumbents anyway?
Yeah - gives me an idea for TDF team time trial...OffTheBack

One of those, but with three rows of three seats each. All nine guys on one machine. No more dropping a rider! ;-)

I think the fastest "recumbents" are the full fairing over-engineered jobs (like the sort used to set human-powered land speed records). Somehow, I think a standard 'bent is inherently slower than a traditional road bike... I've never been passed by a bent rider- FWIW. Of course it could be the riders? They might all just have really bad backs ;)

It is a curious issue: would four people be faster than two on a tandem, or one on a road bike? How does the weight of the bike scale as more people are added? How much energy is lost in the complex drive train? How aero is the setup? I'd hate to steer the thing!

cool, I'd like to try one. Getting 4 people on one bike would be a great time. About speed, the above post was asking, I know tandems are faster than regular single frames. Thats all I know. Great questions though(I sound like a school teacher already). In an ideal world there would be buses like that instead of the nasty, loud, and smelly deseil buses we have in philly. Philly's air sucks.

... these are a general form of transport, and not designed for speed per se...

I've never tried one... but believe that they're more of a trend round resorts and such... their high costs would keep most individuals away (both cyclist and non) and their footprint resembles a small car so storage might be an issue.

I suspect that the gearing (even with several quads working) would not be sufficient to maximize horsepower... and the position of the seating seems to favor comfort over speed (high and upright... hips well above the bottom bracket... which in recumbent designs spells slow).

I knew one of you would know where they come from, yeah thats it and it looked really cool. I passed the guy on the highway and he passed me again when I was watering the desert plants, and then I passed him again and then he passed me as I went around for another loop over the hoover dam. Cheers.
