|I've had several pairs of shorts and bibs wear out in the past year, always in the same spot -- just above the pad in the rear. What baffles me is that the shorts don't rub the saddle at this point, so I can't figure out why they would wear out there, as it is certainly not from abrasion. I sent an e-mail to Voler about it, and they said it sound like the classic "sweat tunnel" syndrome -- which made no sense to me because they didn't explain it, and my shorts get a lot less sweaty than my jerseys, which never wear out. For what it's worth, I rotate among 4 pairs of bibs, and ride about 600 miles/month on average. My shorts all seem to start wearing thin in the back after about 12-15 months of use. Is this normal wear?|

|I got a few pair of bibs this year and had mixed results. A Santini pair had a perfect (for me) chamois but doesn't seem to be holding up real well. Stitching is letting go all over the place and the shorts are wearing away at the edge of the chamois. A Nalini pair is almost as comfy and is lasting quite a bit longer. If Bellweather made bibs I'd buy 'em. Every item that I have from them has lasted a long damned time.|

|I had the very same thing happen to some Castelli shorts. The material came apart on the back of the shorts. Now I may have not purchased the highend line, but did pay $69 at LBS. I only got 6 months out of them. I do machine wash and hang dry, as the instructions say to do. These only got used once a week as I have other shorts to rotate in.
On the same lines purchased some PI ultrasensor same price as the Castelli and the PI ar on the second season with NO sign of wear.
I guess I do not need to tell you what brand replaced the castelli's

|One thought on why the shorts would wear out over the jersey is that they are being "loaded" or stretched during wear. So that if there is a degradation in the fabric due to sweat, it may lead to the wear you are experiencing.
I am a big fan of the voler's and I am getting about the same wear you are seeing ~1 year with similar use. Although I have a hard time throwing out shorts even when worn beyond use.

|while they don't have th wicking abilities of the pricier shorts the pad is great and antibacterial and they do seem to last - I hand wash and drip dri them but I get more than a season out of them amybe 2 or 3 before the foam underthe pad wears out.
also they go real cheap after season on ebay - I get 3 or 4 for the price of a Castel. or Assos....

|I have been wearing Nike drifit bibs (3 pair)that I got at Nashbar Outlet store when it was still up and running. I have crashed twice in them and got bad road rash and they did NOT tear. I wear them year round. I think I bought them in 1996. They are starting to wear out, the chamois is not real comfortable on rides over 2 hours and since I bought a bunch of Santini and Nalini kit, I prefer the newer stuff. Right now, Nike is the yardstick for bibs longevity.|| |
