After reading the discussion thread on cadence from earlier today, I found an interesting article from cycling science on the internet. It gives some scientific basis to the high cadence theory. Hope others find it useful.

Q: Does an optimal pedaling cadence exist for cycling?

A: In terms of mechanical efficiency, heart-rate response, perceived exertion and lactate concentration, the optimal pedal rate for a typical recreational cyclist is 80 rpm with a range of 60 to 100 rpm. A pedal cadence range of 90 to 115 rpm is frequently cited as the optimal range for racing. This is because competitive cyclists often have to sacrifice energy efficiency for speed and, as such, generally cycle at cadences 15 to 30 percent faster than typical recreational cyclists. It is important to keep in mind, however, that a relatively high pedal cadence with low resistance reduces the risk of sustaining an overuse injury. Competitive cyclists should begin their riding seasons with 500 to 1,000 miles of this type of riding. For some competitive cyclists, a change to high-cadence, low-resistance pedaling may require changing the gears on their bikes.
