after only 3 years about 3500 to 4000miles it just stop upshifting and had to be replace? is this normal wear? $100 for the right shifter install right in the middle of a 75 miles ride. would I do better with the italian shifter? or was this just bad luck ( am very unlucky ).my LBS said thats not uncommon, but DAMM.........
Sounds about normal for Ultegrasidley

Ultegra shifters are notoriously fragile. I think I've read there was a particular problem with the 1999 vintage. Mine lost a screw after about 1000 miles, and has rattled along for the last 3000 miles but still shifts just fine.

This is NOT normal. However, this is what will happen if the little screw comes out of the back of your shifter and you just ride it anyway. The choice is yours. Do yourself a huge favor and replace the little screw and add a dab of Loctite or else get the plastic out.

mine started to rattle around 3000 miles. Still shifts fine though and I have around 15,000 miles in them now.

I just finished building a bike with Dura Ace and like the feel of the Dura Ace better. I'll be keeping the Ultegra on the other bike until it demands replacing.
