Which Bike to Buy: Compact Litespeed or Giant TCR???(8 posts)

Which Bike to Buy: Compact Litespeed or Giant TCR???peterkg

Assuming all things being equal compenent/wheel wise, which bike should I get? I fit well on both and with only cursory parking lot test rides, I really cannot get a good sense of how each bike will handle as far as long distance comfort, high speed descents, fast cornering, and hills ability. I'm specifically looking at the Siena and the TCR1... I know the Siena is more, and I can afford it, but why spend more cash when I don't have to. I've done all the homework and know the supposed differences between titanium and aluminum, but cannot get a real sense of things in the parking lot!

BTW, I'm a recreational rider (about 2x during the week, with long rides on the weekend) who enjoys competing in century rides and the like. Thanks!

I own a TCR2 and am happy with it, but if you plan on doing longer rides you might want to go with the Litespeed. That titanium frame combined with the curved carbon/ti seat stays will probably give you a more comfortable ride than an aluminum TCR1. Or, if you can afford it, you might check out the new, sub-16lbs, 2003 Giant TCR Composite:

It's a fast, light bike which is probably also comfortable on long distance rides. ONCE rode it in the TDF this year.

you're not racing, right? get the Siena. will be MUCH better for centuries.

Well, then what is your opinion of carbon fiber as compared to titanium for long distance comfort? Thanks, Peter

never ridden either!
anyways, I just remembered that this year's Siena has CF stays. I would personally get last year's Siena, and not get any other bike for a long time ...
also, you shouldn't have TOO many problems with integrated headsets, aside from some isolated incidents. the one on my TCR works almost perfectly (so far...).

...were reported in a post below by singletrack "integrated headsets or not."

desmo posted the following:

this is in no way meant to condem a whole product line, but my local Litespeed dealer just sent his personal Siena back because of an "ovalized" intergrated headset race. probably an isolated occurance but thought it worth passing on.

I own both, a TCR1 and a 2003 Siena. Both great bikes. The siena is much more comfortable, I never realized how much I felt the street on the TCR until after I rode the Siena for awhile. They both climb good. Either one would be a good choice. However for anything over 40 miles I will use the litespeed. One other thing I noticed the Siena is stable at speed yet coners good. The TCR is a little less stable. The wide aero fork on the TCR gets hit by crosswinds more than the Ouzo pro on the siena.
