I never even heard about it...but that's cycling for you...

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (AP) — September 19 - Greg LeMond will lead 1,250 bicyclists on a three-day, 270-mile (434-kilometer) ride from New York City to Washington this weekend to honor those killed in the Sept. 11 attacks.
Joining the three-time Tour de France winner will be New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, Rep. Nydia M. Velasquez and firefighters, police officers and families of the victims.

"It's a memorial for those who died," LeMond said. "You know, cycling is one of the best tools for healing. The solitude allows you to think and maybe to escape a little faster. When I'm stressed, I go out for a bike ride."

The weekend ride, called Face of America 2002, begins Friday morning from ground zero and is sponsored by World T.E.A.M Sports, a charity based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Here were the particulars: $300, 3 days, got you camping space, showers, entertainment and meals. No money went to any one charity, it went to the organization. No post ride transportation of gear or bikes, you were on your own once you got dropped at a bus, train, or airport.

By my estimation round trip would have cost me $900-$1100. Forsaw a logistical nightmare and decided I could not in good faith ask for donations to joy ride in the East for 3 days on a ride that did not have a charitable cause. It was beyond my limits. As a comparison, Cycle North Carolina, 1 week of riding, $225 for trip including transportation of me, bike and gear from the finish, $137 for 20 meals.
