Get a jump on Friday: Plan my vacation for me.retro

My company changed vacation policies and forgot to tell some of us, so I have four weeks vacation I just found out about. Have to use two weeks of it by Halloween, family's in school or at work; they can't go. Friends can get a day here and there, but not the whole time. I don't mind being alone and enjoy long distance driving.
I ride mountain and road about equally, but I'm probably thinking roadie for this, or maybe an old MB with multipurpose tires. Dirt's fine, single track is not a necessity. I'm going to throw a tent etc. in back, and might camp two nights out of three, then check into a motel to shower and watch a football game.
Range: Western U.S. between San Francisco and Denver, Portland to Los Angeles. But I could be talked into Seattle. Anybody have a brain rush here?

Great MTB riding at all three, great camping, some of the most beautiful country anywhere. Road biking at Moab (Arches in particular) and Fruita (National Monument) are excellent options. Got Zion and Bryce National Parks if you looking for days off the bike. Perfect time of year to be these places; great temperture, little to no rain, not many crowds, hotels are cheap.

Events going on. . .the Road Apple Rally (MTB) is in Farmington, NM on Oct 5th, 24 hours of Moab, Oct 12. Moab is still good that weekend if you're not into the 24 hour thing. The race is far from most of the trails. If you are interested, just post your name at GrannyGear.com and I'm sure someone will be looking for an extra rider for their team.

I'm planning to head out that direction (live in Denver) toward the end of Sept. and early October (hey, no job so I might as well take advantage of riding I can't do normally). If you're looking for a riding buddy let me know, maybe we can hook up. Have fun with this golden opportunity!

For road, what about Italy? It's great in September... Otherwise I'd take the mtb and maybe check out some place like Bend, OR (heard/read lots of good things about this place). Maybe post over at mtbr.com for more suggestions. Have fun!

In fact I have to go by there and rehang a gate for them before I'm allowed to leave. But I'm liking that Hawaii idea--my wife had a ticket to New York she didn't use last Sept after the WTC attacks, and I could swap that sucker...

Drive up to Tahoe, rent a motel room and drive around the lake (72 miles). Or Yosemite is a place I've considered riding this time of year. Summer is over and probably not too crowded during the week.
