Road Bike Shorts or MTB Shorts?(7 posts)

Road Bike Shorts or MTB Shorts?Terrapin
Sep 3, 2002 11:48 AM
I'm a newbie at road bikes (love it though!) and I've in my now three weeks of riding my (aluminum) bike that I definately need some sort of padding.

So, is there any reason (other than fashion or minimal wind resistance) that I should NOT get MTB shorts, since I prefer their appearance. Will they chafe more than road shorts, or anything?

I prefer the appearance of MTB as well. But once I tried the more traditional road shorts, I will not go back. If I was planing to stop in somewhere I would wear the MTBs though.

by MTB shorts do you mean the shorts with a lycra short and chamois sewn in? only problems you might have are that the bottom of the shorts catches on the front of the seat. for really long distances you will get more chafing because there are more seams and material to sit on, but for the typical 1-3 hour ride you should be fine.

The chamois is sewn in. The material around it is more like the lining on a swim suit, not lycra. I've seen the lycra ones too.
I strongly advise against depends!Uncle Tim

They do offer a good amount of padding, but they will dry out the skin on your underside. If you do choose to wear the Depends, don't commit the social blunder of wearing them under your lycra shorts.
FWIW, I wear MB shorts 80-90 percent of the timeretro

Just about as comfortable for most rides I do (20-40 miles), and you don't get that whole Men In Tights thing if you stop for cappuccino. I'm doing a century next weekend, and I'm still deciding about that.

I got some really nice mountain bike "shorts" as a present and thought they looked really stylish. I certaintly have had times out in the country about thinking twice going into a convenience store wearying my Lycras. But after riding the shorts on my road, cross and mtb bike, I find no value in them. They flap like crazy on the road, are too hot in the summer and get caught in the saddle when moving back and forth on the mtb or jumping on the cross.
