Looking for good rides in the Ft. Walton/Destin area for upcoming weekend. Scenic, traffic safe rides. Looks like Hwy 30a could be a good choice. Anyone in the area have thoughts/suggestions?

I was just there, and did a triathlon (elephant walk) nice area, great beaches. I rode the Ironman Fl course in Panama city so I can't help you in Destin.
Have fun and post pictures.

down there last month for the first time in six years and was SHOCKED at (a) the horrendous volume of traffic and (b) the aggressive way people drove.

Might be better now that sumnmer vacation season is over.

Thanks for the reply,

I guess tourist growth has been tremendous, what with all the high rise condo sea walls that have been built in the last few years. im hoping the crowds have gone home.

30A should be a nice ride. It even has a paved bike path in some parts. The path is wide enough for three riders side buy side. There should not be that much traffic since the summer is over.
Paved wall-to-wall joggers path, as I recall!scottfree

how far to Navarre/ Pensaloca Beach?tarwheel

If the drive isn't too far, you might want to head over to Navarre Beach. The road from there to Pensacola Beach is about 15-20 miles one way, with a bike trail (if needed) almost the entire way. If you ride early in the morning, the traffic isn't bad and you can ride on the highway no problems. When traffic picks up, the trail is newly paved and not bad except for the occasional spots where sand and gravel have washed on it. From Pensacola Beach, you can continue riding west toward Fort Pickens and add another 10 miles or so each way. Much of the highway goes through national seashore, so it is very scenic with no development except in the towns. There is also a nice rest area about halfway between Navarre and Pensacala beaches with picnic tables, shelters, bathrooms and water. I have spent a week at Pensacola Beach the past two years visiting relatives and haven't found better riding in the area.

30-45 min via car. I am from P'cola FL.

Now in Huntsville AL :(. They only bad thing about riding aroung the beach is the drunks. Sun and booze....don't mix. I have been hit once by a beer bottle (in the head) and the other was a miss. My father was military so I found riding on base safer.
