|Anyone on the Atkins diet, and bicycling?||gogene|

|My wife just started the Atkins diet and she is a avid cyclist. Together, we like to do distance rides, centuries, etc. Her questions are how do you "load up" for a vigorous century-type ride with low carbs? What you you consume during the ride to keep the energy levels up? Do you make your own "go-juice", or is there some commercially available energy drinks that meet the requirements of the Atkins diet? Any info and links to websites with the desired info is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave|

|Depending on what phase she is in, the best energy drink seems to be the CytoMax Lite (low glycemic).
There is also a drink called Champion Lyte that is a sugar free electrolyte replacement.
It is very difficult to do real long distance while on the diet. You must keep your pace down and drink lots of water to help the body metabolize stored fat.
Later on when you reach your goal weight, you can account for your daily ration of carbs by taking in as many as you feel you will burn off during a ride.

|the atkins diet is not a diet for athletes. it is a diet for sedentary people.
however, if you can keep up the long slow distance miles, burning fat and not as much stored glycogen, then you could stand to really speed up the process and get back to normal eating sooner.

|Greetings...The Atkins diet has been a topic of discussion for years. If you would like to try a more balanced (and I think more healthy) approach to weight loss, you may want to check out the 12 week Body for Life program. I don't want to sound like a salesman, but, without exception, everyone I know who has completed this program has had great results. I dropped more than 26lbs of weight in 3 months on this balanced program of aerobic exercise, strength training and balanced diet. During the program I lost significant body fat, gained significant strength and had plenty of energy.
After finishing the program, I picked up my cycling miles, adjusted my strength training routine and dropped another 10lbs of weight and 5-7% body fat.

|It's not quite that simple, but close. A lot of people here know it as the "Little Green Book" diet. It seems to work for Lance so it's condusive to a cycling lifestyle. Here's a link that describes it in detail. . .
What I've found is that if you pay more attention to your diet, you make good choices. Add in regular excerise and you'll maintain or lose weight. If you're still unhappy with your weight, then you need to be even pickier about eating and/or do more excercise, then make that a permanent lifestyle change if you want to stay at that level. Playing around with ratios of carbs, protein, and fat can help, but I think what works is very individual and ultimately less effective than just watching the calories.

|I was on the Atkins Diet about 2 years ago. I lost about 20 pounds and have been able to keep it off ever since. In fact, using the basic tenants of the diet, I have been able to lose an additional 10 pounds (by(mostly) eliminating refined sugars, processed flour, etc) and have felt very good while training. I will, however, eat simple carbs during a workout to try to avoid bonking.
Two years ago, when I did the diet by the book and tried to train & race, I felt I was instantly bonking and cramping. In fact one of the biggest things I noticed while on the diet was my constant cramps which went away as soon as I lost the weight and started to re-introduce carbs into my diet.
I would not recommend striclty following the diet while training heavily. This was painful for me(I did lose the weight, though).
I feel strongly, that the basic idea of the diet, controlling carb intake in proportion to your burn rate is extremely effective at enabling one to perform well and stay within a certain weight range. Now, the carbs I ingest are burned off during workout. I no longer am cramping and I have not bonked in a long time( I always have gu at the ready).
At the end of the day, it is really about eating right and balancing that with a good dose of exercise. Using carb intake as a lever for increasing and decreasing weight has been effective for me....imho.
