see the funknuggets post above. These are the Sampson cleats that had a freaky designed cleat that clipped into the front and then over the back of the pedal. There were two types, plastic, and then metal reinforced. The cleat was basically shaped like an "L" and the back of it was about an inch or so tall, so walking around in those bastards is next to impossible. In addition, they had a propensity to break off... bad design.

Sampson "death" cleats. They were rear entry pedals, like a Look, but the "locking" mechanism was a 90 degree bend off of the horizontal, so they hung down in back to hold onto the pedal. If you walked in them, they wore down, and then wouldn't stay in. Saw people come out in sprints all the time using these pedals.
