How to tell if 7 or 8/9spd hub?DT
Aug 30, 2002 6:51 AM
I have an old set of wheels with Shimano 600 hubs on them and I want to build up a commuter bike. How can I tell if the rear hub is 7spd or 8/9 spd without trying to put my current 9spd cassette on it? I don't really want to take the trouble to take it off then put it back on if I don't have to...thanks!

The ridges on a 8/9 speed freehub body are about 33mm long. The ones on an 7 speed wheel in my basement were 31mm.

Uh - Too lazy to pull off your cassette to check?

If you have a 7 speed cassette on a 8/9 speed hub there will have to be a 4.5mm spacer on the inside of the cassette to take up the extra width betweem the 7 speed and the 8/9.
just try it onSteve_0
