just coming off an upper respirtory illness. no riding for 2 weeks and much of that i was on my back. i went for a very easy 20 miles yesterday and will do so again today. how long should i wiat before i hit it hard again? also, how long can i expect to have to wait until i return to former fitness level? (which can best be described as moderate).

Buy a juicer!

Your recovery times will become astronomical!

One of the items that suffers is your aerobic base. Sickness
is not the same as being off the bike for a few weeks
as far as aerobic base is concerned. Moderate rides at a low
heart rate(60% - 65%). For me it is increasing the length
of time at a low HR that has helped me. Not the intensity
of high HRs or intervals.

The old rule of hand from the Finns when it came to running (endurance events) was that for each day that you were sick, you took a day off to recover. Personally I think this is way too long, with extended sickness, you may not exercise for a month. I would go hard when when you feel "right." Afterall, the Finns used to be tough, kicked some Russian ass in WWII, but now? I guess they are still recovering from some illness.
