Ksyrium SSC SL or Dura Ace wheelset? Some questions.Fez
Aug 26, 2002 5:49 PM
I have $800 burning a hole in my pocket that I must spend on wheels so which one would you choose and why?

1) People have said Ksyrium is not the lightest or the most aero. Then what is?

2) If DuraAce, what is better about the "carbon" wheelset over the original? How come so few riders use this wheelset?

3) On a separate topic, what is the difference between the current Campy Neutron wheelset and last year's Nucleon wheelset?

I love my Ksyriums. Fast, relatively light and bombproof. I've had no experience on any of the other wheels though.

Cheers,
Nick

PS The Ksyriums are black so they may not be the lightest or most aero but they can hide from the wind and hills.
uh....what?collinsc

wait...what does their blackness have to do with any of that?

I am very happy with mine. I paid $605 total (includes shipping, no tax and no duty) from www.totalcycling.com.
1) lighter and more aerotao

1) Zipp 303's are nearly a pound (390 grams) lighter and more aero, though more expensive, but look for deals!

do you mean Fes ( the Foreign Exchange Student, from that '70's show??? )? Sorry if this has been explained but I'm new and somewhat lazy, or just tired of doing searches.

If ksyriums are so good? Then how come they are blasted all over ebay?

Just curious..
Ebay: new or used?fbg111

Sometimes local stores use Ebay to sell to a larger audience without having to go through the trouble of setting up and running their own e-commerce website. Ebay has a special program for such businesses. If the Ksyriums all over Ebay are mostly new, then that's probably what's going on. If they're mostly used, then you may have a valid concern.
They are all new- nmfiltersweep

I've had mine for about a year!
And I bought them used. They are the best wheels I have had.
Not only that, I weigh 245lbs-talk about abuse.
I've had Rolf vector comps - weak and heavy.
open pros w/ ultegra hubs - strong but still flexy.
Ksyrium SSC (older version) - stiff, relatively light and long lasting, oh and they also look killer.

I highly recommend them, I have had no problems w/ them I use them for training and racing.

I am about 210 and looking for some wheels. Sounds like no problems for you with the Kysiriums despite your size. I wonder if others with similar "proportions" have had the same experience?

The wheels are fast and smooth, maybe not the lightest on the market, but they are bombproof. I've hit potholes that bent my other rims, but the Ksyrriums roll away without a wobble. The wheels are as true today as when I first bought them.

Just my 2cents.

I'll never use another wheelset. They went out of true 1x after I first got them-the spokes had not been prepped right at the factory. Haven't gone out since. That was 2 yrs ago and at least 5k miles.
A compromise . . .jefajones

Have you checked the American Classic wheelsets ? The CR 420 (??) is a 34mm aero rim that is built to ~1500g (with rev. spokes - bladed are available but you get a price and slight weight difference over the standard build, I think the aero advantange between bladed and revolutions would be very minimal)for a less expensive price that the Zipp 303 wheelset. However, the duribility/quality of the 303's has been established, for the most part at least, whereas the AC current wheelset has yet to be proven long term.

I know your question was about Ksyrium v. Dura Ace, but have you considered a pair of Ambrosio Diasapon wheels? Or a pair of Fir Klever? They will stand out in the group for not being Ksyriums!

Just a thought...

Any idea where to get FiR wheels or Ambrosio Diasapon wheels?

Thanks!
