|Well I just got my first flat courtesy of an industrial strength staple in the road in front of a residential construction site. Luckily I bought a spare tube along with my bike, so I won't miss my morning ride tomorrow. But now I need to pick up a few more spare tubes. What are some good ones? I'm more interested in strength and flat-prevention than weight.|

|Stay away from latex and ultra-light tubes. Honestly, I've used Specialized, Wrench Force, Continental and Vittoria, and I don't see a huge difference.|

|use one of those instant patch kits (park, performance, etc) on your flatted tube (unless it is unrepairable) and it'll save you a couple of bucks every time you flat. Also, bring that patch kit with you because you never know when you are going to get more than 1 flat in a ride (my experience is that flats seem to be few and far between, but when you get one, it is not entirely uncommon to get another shortly thereafter). You can patch tubes indefinately until you get an unrepairable hole/cut in the tube.

|spare wheelset you ask? the one that you get when you are good enough to recover from changing a wheel, catching the group, and standing on the podium making kissy face.
Otherwise, if you flat during a race, unless there is neutral support, you're out of the race.

|Yeah, but most of my initial racing will be in triathlons. I'd at least like to finish the tri if I flat. Plus, I'm a pretty fast swimmer and if I could do the change in 2:00, then I could probably be back on the bike before I'm dead last.|

|if you bring a spare tube and a patch kit, you are covered. If you flat, put the spare tube on (this spare tube could even be a previously patched tube), inflate, put the flatted tube in your seatbag or jersey, get back on the bike, ride like hell.
If you flat again, you are pretty much out of contention for a good finish (unless you are really really fast at changing tubes and race really fast), or unless you are doing long course racing (half-IM to full-IM). in any case, if you flat a second time, then pull your first flatted tube out, find the hole, instant-patch it, change tubes, inflate, ride. While you are changing the second flat, look in the tire where the flat came from because there might be a tiny piece of glass or something poking thru the tire causing multiple flats.
Also, another tip is to use CO2 cartridges for tri racing situations. Carry 2-3 CO2 cartridges. They save A TON of time in a race situation where you would normally be pumping the tire to inflate it. Thats what i carry in my tri races. In training, i just carry a frame pump instead of the CO2 (to save money).

|The guy at the LBS told me that he wouldn't ride on a patched tube when they are so cheap to replace. I've been buying new tubes, and now it seems like I have a cellar full of them. Is it safe to patch pin holes and re use the tube??
To answer the question below, it it quicker to change the tube. If you're good, you should be able to remove the wheel, replace the tube, inflate it, and put the wheel back on in less thatn 5 minutes

|I've ridden certain patched bicycle tubes for years.
I've driven patched car tires for 40,000 miles (darned nail on brand new treads)
I've ridden patched motorcycle tires, both tires AND tubes, for thousands of miles.
Ive never encountered an unsafe condition in all that riding and driving.
Buy the tubes if you want, I'd just assume save some money, not to mention the time I COULD be riding spent going to the LBS to pick up new tubes.
