Recently I've been experiencing low back discomfort after 20 miles.I can get off for a short period and ride for another 20 before it returns.I have a 500 mi cycle oregon week comng up in sept and I'm concerned.Over the last two months the following changes have been made.I put a pair of insoles in my sidi g3,raisedmy saddle 1/4-1/2cm,increased my weekly mileage to 150.I ride either a c40,or a litespeed natchez with similar set up.I have been stretching only recently to see if it would help.Taking motrin as well.Other suggestions??

I read your post, and I've been experiencing the exact same thing- every 20 miles- and I SWEAR it is not bike setup.

I think my work environment is contributing to this problem. Due to changes at work, I'm spending much more time in my office, which is an ergonomic nightmare.

Its probably no more than 5 cms.I'm middle aged(44) and not that flexible but in good shape.The litespeed has a threaded fork so its easier to adjust the stem which I am plannning on doing.Its the bike Im using for the ride.

try making it more closer to zero and that will/should help. other than that, as far as positioning, i cant think of anything. do you have a bad back to begin with? is the bike comfortable enough, meaning vertically compliant, in the rear end to absorb some road shock? have you thought about a susp. seatpost? just an idea.

ive ridden the LS for 3 years,the c40 for 1.5. I dont have a bad back (so I thought).Can't imagine either bike with a suspension seatpost.When I return from cycle oregon I'll probably be riding my easy racer gold rush recumbent a little more frequently.Its nice to have options!

5 cms can be a lot for a recreational rider. Also there is a big interplay between lower back comfort and hamstring flexibility. Are you a faithful stretcher?

Lower back pain can be caused by weak abdominal and back muscles. Folks who can't handle much bar to saddle drop often have this problem. Specific exercises for the abs work for me. I do hanging knee raises and use an "ab wheel". Stretching is a good idea also. Unfortunately, strength training takes a while to be effective. It's not an overnight cure.

Raising the saddle too high can cause back ache. I used to set my saddle too high and got a back ache on the right side, because my right leg is a little shorter than the left. I was over-extending only on the right side.

All of the previous posts have hit the right issues. Let me add one more. I have not had back muscle spasms for over three years. I religiously stretch my back before I ride, no matter how short the ride. I lie on my back and bring my knees to my chest, have them go from side to side, stretch my hamstrings, and finish off with at least 100 situps. On the bike, I try to change position regularly and do a little no hands riding if necessary every hour or so. I am 57 years old, resigned to the loss of flexibility, and realistic about the lack of opportunity to stretch your back once you throw your leg over the top tube.

Let me add one thought to my prior posting. When you ride, try to keep your back straight and don't hunch over. This applies to riding on the tops and the hoods. You may have to scoot back on your saddle to achieve the same effect in the drops. If you ride on the tops a lot, just look straight ahead and do not bend or flex your back. For climbing, you may get more power and feel more comfortable, sitting close to straight up.
