Would anyone on this board be interested in doing a 9.11 comemorative ride in the Pittsburgh PA area? The ride would take place around 9.11.2002, would go from Grant street (City Hall) in DT PGH to Shanksville, PA. The Yahoo map distance is 81.4 miles but is not the proposed route. I suspect that the proposed route is around 100 miles.

As it stands now an organizer of the Pittsburgh Marathon has the idea in his lap and the wheels are turning to make the ride a reality, however the planning is in it's infancy stages. Completely unsure of ride support, but UPMC may be a strong backer of the ride.

Some feel the first shot in the war on terror was fired with the passengers attacking the highjackers and crashing the plane in Shanksville, PA before it could reach it's destination target.

So, any takers out there?

Sounds like a great way to commemorate the heroism. Keep us posted on the details.

In fact, if you can't make this ride, organize a 91.1 mile ride in your area.
why not 9.11 or 911 miles? nmcyclopathic

or it can be too long for some, all depends on how you'd look at it.

We won't be fooling with trying to make the distance a particular mile mark, we just want to pull something together in a 3 week time frame. It may be an unsupported ride on a Saturday morning or we may have limited ride support. Anyone who has ever organized or thought about organizing a ride knows that it is tough to pull things together quickly. I have contacted Reviwear and inquired about obtaining the Liberty jerseys that are available through Nashbar to see if we could obtain some at cost or a reasonable amount. We are thinking of a ride and Rally point 5 miles out from Shanksville to arrive at the town as a group. Any proceeds to benefit the Shanksville EMS/Fire Dept. To give some of you an idea of where Shanksville is located, it is about 10 miles from where the 9 miners were rescued last month.

I would be very interested in this and I'm fairly close to Pittsburgh. If this were to start coming close to reality I'm fairly sure I could get a few people from my local club to join in as well. Keep us posted.
