|Newbie Question #1: 12gram or 16gram CO2?||menachite|

|Until my pump arrives I have the luxury of using a CO2 inflator, so as the subject poses...
Should I use 12gram or 16gram cartridges.
|12gram inflates 700x23 to about 80lbs, 16gram = 120-130 lbs. nm||MXL02|

|16 gram is perfect for pumping a road bike tire up hard, but they are expensive. I only rely on them for my go-fast bike, and I only ride it out in the country where there isn't much broken glass. I so seldom flat with that bike that the cost isn't a very important factor to me.
Some guys use one 12 gram cartridge and a part of another. It actually turns out to be cheaper that way because you can buy the 12 gram unthreaded cartridges in volume at K-Mart and the like.

|My pump uses 16g unthreaded cartridges. Are these available cheap anywhere in volume? My LBS sell these for around $6 for a set of 5.|

|basically i've heard a 12g will get you home but you really need about 1 1/3 12g carts to get the pressure up much past 100. plus make sure you replace with "real" air as soon as you can get to a pump as c02 doesn't stay in your tires like air from a floor pump.|

|If your like me and flat often go with a pump for training. The CO2 is nice especially when your in a hurry (i.e. races)but it can also be expensive and there's nothing like getting your 2nd or 3rd flat of your training ride and realizing your out of gas. Anyway save the co2 for races or go with the 12gram as you can get a 15 pack for paintball guns at walmart for like 8 bucks vs 2-4 bucks for a single 16 gram.

|you're either really unlucky or not watching what you ride through. other than that you need new tires. 3 seems like an awful lot to plan for.|| |
