Recommendations for good wearing cycling shorts?DINOSAUR
Aug 19, 2002 2:05 PM
I just discovered a hole in my best pair of cycling shorts, not the most expensive on the planet, Hind 8 panel, I like the way they fit. They lasted two years and I alternate with 3 other pairs of shorts. Can anyone recommend a durable short that doens't cost an arm or a leg? Preferably something from Performanace, and hopefully on sale for around $35.00...I've had good luck with the Performance jerseys, I was thinking of trying their shorts also...they don't stock the model Hind I have now...Do the expensive shorts last longer? Wondering to buy a couple of quailty shorts or just stick with the one's on sale that seem to only last a couple of seasons..also any thoughts on the gel shorts with a gel saddle? I had an old pair of gel shorts and I really liked them...wore out also (sigh)...

I usually get 5 or more years out of my shorts unless I crash em. It helps to have 4-6 pair to rotate though. If you wear the same 2-3 pair all the time and wash them each time they won't last as long. Expensive ones probably don't last any longer, but are more comfortable for long rides.

I have a pair of Performance Pro's ( http://www.performancebike.com/shop/large_photo.html?SKU=14243&Store=Bike ).

I've not had them long enough to know about durability, but they feel just as nice as any expensive shorts I have, and I have about a dozen pair of shorts, including Castelli, Assos, Pearl Izumi, Voler, Performance, and Giordana.

They all seem to wear out after a while; even if the shorts don't come apart, the pad breaks down and thins; I then use them only for shorter rides or on the trainer.

Perhaps not "the best bike shorts on the planet" but pretty good. Comfortable, durable, and often found on sale!
Make that a third for the Elites. Best for the $$$. (nm)Quack

Just got them and not many miles yet but first impressions are good. Alot better than my Giordana 8 panel IMO. Right at your price point too.

replaced old nashbar "elite" pairs with nashbar sunday shorts at xmas '01. compared to voler shorts, the nashbar sunday XL is cut low in the front...meaning low waist. perhaps ok for some, but i prefer to wear mine "ed grimley" style. TMI?

Oorah Devildog! I'm a cheapie and have repaired a few pair of cycling gloves and shorts, too. They have held up since breaking out the sewing kit.

Check their website and get on their email list. They have monthly specials and often have shorts at $34.95. They are high quality with a great pad.

I got a pair earlier this year and they are great.I have a couple pairs of high dollar shorts that do seem to feel a little more comfortable off the bike.I guess I would say they might be softer on the skin. While on the bike the Performance shorts feel as good or better.

I like the Performance Elite shorts also, but they discontinued the pair I wanted to buy, so I got some Volers and I like those slightly more, even. Both are very good, and both are relatively inexpensive.
Thanks to all for the input...DINOSAUR

I wonder if Voler is the vender for Performance shorts? I believe Voler makes their jerseys..

The short life my my shorts is short because I was using a Brooks Pro, which has large-short copper rivets, I am currently using a short Sella Italia Flite Gel and the embroidery eats my shorts in no time short, blame part of my fate on raising a teenage daughter ("Shorty") who eats my money in no time short...this is the short and long of it....

Performance sells a light neoprene seat cover by QR. They are very comfortable and would certainly save your shorts.
