|No coasting, no light pedalling, no water bottle cage, no pockets full of Clif bars...
My next door neighbor some how convinced me to join him on a four mile run at lunch today. OUCH. I can ride a century and feel good afterward, but running....that hurts muscles I forgot I had. And all this coming from a former HS/college track team member.
But, cross training is a good thing. I think I'll run again tomorrow. So do any of you non-triathletes ever run for cross training?

|You are correct, it hurts. I run 2 times per week about 5-6 miles at a time. I started running because I hated riding in cold weather and I got bored with spinning indoors. I've managed to keep it up for about 8 months. Now that I've been doing it awhile, I actually like it. If I'm going on a short out of town business trip, I don't have to worry about packing my bike. My normal schedule now is to run 10-12 miles/wk and cycle another 80-120 miles/wk. My only problem has been carry a water bottle in the heat. I hate carring thinks in my hands.|

|Slowly ease into it. Your cartilage has to readapt to the impact that running involvs after years of not really running. Then you use different muscles running too. Unless you have a perfect pedalstroke you neglect a lot of muscles. Like for me my ant tib (on front of the shin) and hip flexors aren't as strong as they should be. But thats where running does become great cross training.

|I've decided not to run tomorrow. I rode 35 miles yesterday morning, ran 3-4 miles today. That's enough punishment for now. If anything, I'll do some light weight lifting tomorrow at lunch - hey, I gotta do something.|

|My training schedule is as such that I get Wednesday off... so that throws what day I think it is completely off. But good plan taking tomorrow easy and doing weights.

|I have been running for 26 years, I had to stop for knee surgery and used the bike as rehab.
I use to bike to help my running, now I run to help my biking.
I did one leg of a triathlon a few months ago; the bike portion. It was much nicer riding along, drinking and eating, enjoying the scenery instead of struggling with a run.

|It used to be for me too. In college, I ran on the track team - albeit a sprinter. In grad school, I ran 5 miles per day rain or shine. It was my form of release from all of the stress of med school. I used to run in the park next to my house. I loved that. I hate running on sidewalks or streets. Since I have a running partner now, I plan to run about two days per week. I guess my body will get used to it. paul|

|Start slowly on the running and work out a little in the gym. If you have only been bike riding your bones, cartilage and tendons need to be strengthened. I found the same thing and it took me 2 1/2 months to get comfortable. Bicycling really is mainly a cardio workout.|

|In the off season I accompany my wife on some of her marathon training runs. I think the social aspect of it helps keep my mind off it, but I always check and my heart rate is much higher than hers. It takes me two weeks to get the feel of it.|

|Let me tell u about running!!! i gave up cycling a little over 20 yrs ago to run (which was a mistake)...i ran 4 to 5 times per week avg around 40 mi per wk...i felt really bad when i did not run...my daughter even made the comment to me "dad u have not ran today have u"...that is how obsessed i was about it...i went for my physical last january and my doctor told me if did not stop running i would have to have knee replacement surgery...to stop running was the hardest thing i have had to do...i have tried since to run a couple of times per week but my 52 year old body will just not let me do it...i started back cycling full time in january when i was told to stop runing and guess what? no knee pain....wonder what that means...sometimes i still do not feel like i get the same exercise from the bike but i sure do enjoy it more....good luck and ride safe(run safe)|

|I started out as a cyclist in Jr. High and took up running when I was 16, though I considered myself primarily a cyclist and had dreams of riding as a pro until I was about 20. So, basically I ride for cross training now. (XC in my log-on name is for cross country running and cross country skiing, not mountain biking, though I do that too.)
Those of you who run a lot know that the more of it you do, the easier it gets. I run everyday, sometimes two or three times a day to take my dog out or to do an orienteering meet. About half of my running is in the mountains. Two weekends ago I hiked 4 hours/ran 1.5 hours on Saturday and ran 4 hours on Sunday. Then I did 25 miles on Wednesday combining a tempo run workout with an orienteering meet and getting locked out of my car and having to run home. My legs still felt good...

|I have been running twice a week since June slowly adding 10% to my distance each week. I am up to about 10K and my speed is improving. Its a 3K run,15K bike,3K run and its my first du. I am hoping to stay with the pack on the first run leg,then spank'em on the bike,then probably get get dropped hard on the finish sprint run! At least I will see where I stand,fitness wise.|

|I do both, whatever seems right that day. It means I never have to start a ride in the rain or ride indoors on a cold day. For me, running hurts only when there is speed involved. Left to shuffle along at my easy pace, I don't find it painful or injurious. Just as it takes most people time to learn to spin, it takes time to learn to run gently. Both are possible and well worth the learning process.
Running on trails hurts far less than running on the track which hurts far less than running on the roads. I never run more than a few steps on sidewalks. I expect less than 500 miles from a pair of running shoes. People who try to wear a pair forever are kind of like people who try to get 3000 miles out of a racing tire except they wonder about injuries in stead of flats.
The greatest danger for a fit cyclist starting out is that your aerobic fitness makes it possible to run more than your skeletal system is ready for. It takes time for your body to toughen so keep the speed and mileage down until it feels easy to go further or faster. Use running for your recovery days after hard rides.
Have fun with it. It's the most convenient and simplest exercise available.

|Don't worry, it stops being painful after a time. I've been running since February, and it took me 5 months and two new pairs of running shoes to cure my shin splints. But once you're over the hump, it's not so bad.|| |
