it is an ultra event 400mi with 40hr time limit (there's also easier 355mi route). It is rated at 27,000' of climbing which wouldn't sound that bad if
1) there weren't 100mi flat section in the middle
2) grades were reasonable
Climbs are short (400-800-1200' gain) but the thing is there're very few climb in single digits, mostly high teens and some sections in middle/upper 20s. With exception of RAAM racers and a very few locals everyone runs triples; many use MTB cassette on top and it is well justified.
This is the ride from hell, deff the toughest ride on East Coast. Even Boston-Montreal-Boston which is almost twice longer with some hard climbs is nothing in comparison.
