Match race challenge to the poser known as WCC . . .SimonRex

I thought the board might be interested in the details of a race challenge between my friend, who posts under the moniker "WCC", and myself. First, a little background. I purchaed my first road bike a year ago for fitness reasons. My friend is the one who actually convinced me to buy the bike. He has been biking for several years, both mountain and road, and has raced a few Cat 5 races. I have never raced. He has a top of the line Merkxx whereas I have a LeMond Buenas Aires with upgraded Ultegra components.

I am 5-6 and weigh 185-90 pounds at present becasue have not been on the bike this year except for 4 weeks so am just starting to get back into shape. My friend has been riding regularly since the spring.

Nonetheless, I challenged him to a pair of races for next year. Each can pick whatever road race format he wishes-i.e. distance, course, etc . . . . By next June I will be in shape and will have lost the weight so am confident of winning. My secret will be my off season training program. Plus, I know how he trains and rides so that will also be my trump card. Yes, he has a better bike and more experience, but I shall prevail. Becasue he is a friend, I will probably not make him suffer. If he angers me then I may toy with him to teach him a lesson. It would be to easy to just drop the hammer on him early on since he can just coast in the rest of the way. No, I want him to feel some pain so will let him stay close to maximize the punishment.

If anyone is interested, I will post a journal over the course of the next 9 months of my training progress and the details of the race format. I may ask for suggestions on the race format and would appreciate your input.

Last, for now on I will call myself the Rooster. WCC thinks he is "coming to snuff the Rooster, but he aint gonna die!"

WCC posted below. This is very real.

The Rooster cometh for WCC.

..The only aspect of his "training plan" he has let me in on is that he will ride his trainer while watching football this winter. That will never happen, just like the race will never happen. He is always all bark no bite. I could embarrass him on here if i wanted to, but I think he's doing a good job of that all by himself.

Rooster, you seem awfully confident for a man who is has a long way to go, but good luck. So how did this challenge come about? Did one of you perchance say something that perturbed the other? Let me guess, he called you slow? Rooster,I dont think you are embarassing yourself on here, I've had much worse. I dont know if anyone would remember it but once when I was in the middle of a hostile flame war with some women my girlfriend came on and sided against me.

what are you going to do for himishmael

I'm not big on the science behind training. I think all he needs is the motivation, which he seems to have(for how long I wonder) and a half decent bike(which you have roster). I think the time he has is enough to give a middle of the road cat5 a good race. He would know better than us if its just his bravado or if he really thinks he can pull it off. My money is on roster, he's got the attitude of a killer.

Actually I have some advice. Other than the standard-drink lots, ride lots, and ride hard. You should find out what you are best at and what he is best at. It's shocking how extremely one sided some people are. Generally people are better at either hills or sprinting(crits). Maybe you want to work on your weakness, or find a race more suited to you.

When you start riding you can either just ride and get in shape that way. Its true the best way to get in shape is just to ride. But someone such as myself who knows the science behind training can give direction to that time just riding and easily multiply the results you see.

Cheers,
Nick

do not soil the board with your training journal. The last thing this board needs is 9 months worth of entries like:

"Week 12: I finally upgraded from block pedals to toe clips. Soon I plan on removing the training wheels as well. Bring it on, Lance."

Just ride, have fun, enjoy the fitness gains. If one day you better this friend, enjoy the fleeting glory of victory, but do so with grace and class. Paybacks are hell! :-)
get a license. . .rob45

why don't you both get a USCF license and compare yourself to some real riders. This sounds a bit like bragging about beating your kid sister. In terms of journal entries, thanks, but if I'm going to spend time reading journal entries, they'll be Lance Armstrong's and the other pros at Carmichael's CTS site....
Hey, dont blame me....WCC
