|Spending next week at the beach (near the Newport pier). Will be able to sneak away from the family for three or four rides in the 2 hour range. Where should I go? Generally I'd be down to just explore, but time will be limited and I want to do good rides.|

|Here's a link to some rides near Newport Beach (Irvine and Tustin are pretty close):
And a couple of better maps/aerial shots:

|Well, a couple of ideas are to head straight up or down PCH. Lots of scenery and goings on. Go visit Balboa island. You will not find good long distance rural type riding. Newport Beach is a classic richy rich pack em, rack em and stack em community. Things are tight, lots of cars, each owned by a person who is rich and thinks that they in particular own the world. I'd suggest getting into contact with a good roadie shop down there and ask about local group rides. Have fun!
You might want to get in touch with Team Simple Green. Velo Allegro has daily rides out of Long Beach. A good team.

|the Santa Ana River trail is about 60 miles round trip, you can add more by heading up or down the coast. It can be somewhat monotonous, but it's safe trail where you can get up to speed for long stretches. there's a brewco in newport beach for post-ride carb ingesting. |
not a very good site, but...
good luck with the heat.
