by keeping your head cooler rather than having the sun beating down on you. When your head overheats - body functions will start shutting down. Likewise, when your head is able to dump heat body can continue to function.
Chris Carmichael stated something to this effect during the Tour.

I encountered and solved the same problem by using a coolmax headsweat . It keeps sweat off eyes completely, without making it hotter under the helmet. It may have a cooling effect too, but Im not too sure on that.

If you go for one that covers the head, you can also avoid weird looking helmet hair. One thing to note is that it tends to make the helmet feel a little tighter, so you want to avoid one that covers the head if you have a tight helmet to start with.

I am sure these things work but for $20 I can buy about 2 dozen bandanas and they probably work just as well and are quite a bit thinner so as to not make your helmet too tight.
Wear bandana with Kotex panty liner, no kidding (nm)Breakfast

A trick used by a RAAM rider, it works good, too.Breakfast

Just get the adhesive side against the inside of bandana or do-rag and the absorbant side against your forehead.

Your wife will complain if you use all hers, though.

twist your head to the side and push your lid into your head. watch the sweat pour out of the padding and away from your eyes. your friends and family will think you're really cool (read gross). and you won't have to waste time and money on additional gear, when your helmet is already equipped to take care of you!!
