I would need to drive into NYC from PGH and park my car for 4 days. I would need to get a room in NYC. I would need to get to the ride site in the am with all my gear and bike. When the ride was done I would need to get from DC to NYC with my bike and gear. I would need to get another room sunday before heading out on monday.

It is a just and noble cause, no question there. I estimate the cost to me to be close to $800 to $1000. The $300 entry gets you food, entertainment, tent space, showers and bathroom facilities. This is not a charity ride. In good faith I could not solicit funds from the general public for me to go joy ride for a weekend. I saw it as a logistical nightmare when a bus or train transport back to NYC was not included in the price. FYI.

From the web site:

Is this a fund raising event?
The event is not raising funds for any specific relief fund or charity, but confirmed participants are welcome to use this event to raise money for their favorite cause or charity.

It sounds like this is a 'for profit' event for the sponsors.
