You'll have to go a little North...

|just kidding, here is what I raced for 3 yrs until early 1998. Most often right at the 200 MPH area with.....I doubt you guessed it- a 388" supercharged alcohol-burning small block Chevy. Won the Midwest Funncy Car Association championship in 1997. Won their last race in '96, and first one in '98 also. Not enough time anymore though, our little one is 3 now and my wife would kill me if I were gone every weekend.|

|... I won't swear it was right, but I was definitely cookin' down that scarry-assed hill in SW Virginia.
On a level road, with a slight tailwind, I've just nudged past 29 mph a few times, and I've hit that same speed indicated on the computer accelerating down the back straight of a velodrome, with the gravity assist dropping out of the turn. Not bad for a singlespeed cruiser, pretty pathetic if it were on a roadbike.

|Now that is something to brag about. Oh, and it doesn't count unless you rode up the hill in the same gear, too.
36 mph for me.

|This was in a group--a very long straight section of downhill. Thought it was fast til I talked with John Howard, who did 150+ mph, the record still I believe.|

|I've had my computer register 47 on 42X14 (I think that's around 185-190 rpms) Since I went to the 42x16 I have only caught 35, which is hard, but repeatable. so I wonder about the first score???|

|I am not too sure of the road's name. If you are going up the hill from the lodge and instead of going though the gates for the second half continue on.
There wasn't a soul out, visibility was great, and I could see a great deal ahead. Just sprint on the flat and downhill part and let the slope do the rest. Someone went ahead to ensure there were no deer out - for what it was worth.
Unlike the "cuts" in the road on Seven Lakes Drive this part of the hill is pretty smooth. I would never consider doing this speed from the very top - the road is just not good enough. Even down to the bottom the slope just isn't enough. It's all in the sprint.

|Often crossed the 40-45 mph, but most of them were just very short very steep slopes (cant call them hills) and were no fun at all because it all gets over in 20 seconds or so.
CA-9, Hwy-84 come to mind as great fast fun decents with lots of turns and last several minutes. Negotiating all those turns, sure feels FAST and is a lot more fun, but I doubt I've ever crossed 40 mph on one of those.

|On a bike: |
When I was 26-27 yrs old, 62.5 mph on a downhill with a 25 mph tailwind.
Freaking scary, trying to outrun an incoming thunderstorm. I didn't win.
As I was heading east like a bat out of heck about 3/4ths of a mile after the hill
I got soaked to the skin by rain and at one point it started hailing. OUCH.
I was nuts back then I think.
Since I started riding again four years ago:
45 mph on the same downhill last summer.
33.3 mph on the TCR2 this past sunday.

|Nothing to brag about, but I've hit 45 mph twice -- in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee and in Southern Ohio on the GOBA ride, which is notable for the fact that it was a group ride with 3,000 people, many of whom don't appear to ride a bike otherwise. That made it rather scary, particularly after passing a seatpack in the middle of the road about halfway down the hill. I am admittedly a wimp when it comes to downhills when I'm riding with a group and exceeding 40 mph. At about 35 mph, I start think about all of the what ifs -- eg, what if I have a blowout, or hit a pothole, gravel, etc.|

rollers started making a lot of noise at that speed so I backed off.
|145-150 MPH, S.Dakota, 3A.M., Very stupid!!!!||Quack|
Aug 6, 2002 7:21 AM
|I forgot this was a bicycling forum. That speed was attained on a Ducati motorcycle under a full moon across the barren wasteland that is South Dakota. Fastest speed on a road bike is currently 43.4MPH in a club sprint drafting off a Cat 1 guy. There aren't any hills to speak of in my area so speeds above 40 are really tough to do unless there are monster tailwinds or drafts.|

|The fastest down hill was 53 mph outside of St. Louis. Got up to 47 mph on the flats with the help of a 35 mile an hour tailwind. Hit 160 mph in a car, won't say where or when on a public board. The biggest speed rush is on the water, 103 mph in a hydroplane I built way back in my youth.|| |
