I'm going to be in the Redding, Ca area this coming week. I would like to take a day and ride towards Mt. Lassen. The general plan is to take Highway 44 to the park entrance, have lunch and return. Has anyone done this? What is the road like? Alternative roads?

The road has some pretty narrow, winding spots and appears to be a bit on the dangerous side in those spots. I drive it in a car to go fishing and have thought about riding my bike in the area, but have ruled out Highway 44 particularly up near the park. You might try doing a triangle up 44 to Deschuttes Road ( I think that's the name of it; it's about 9 miles west of Shingletown). Turn right and follow it back down to Airport Road near Anderson, then back to Redding. To be sure, check a local map, and carry lots of water.
