Who believes the RBR "hit by car" poll results?mja

43 percent of you have been hit by a car! You must be a sturdy lot. I'm surprised more of you aren't dead.

But, seriously, that result seems high. It's making me nervous about riding my bike!

I wouldn't recommend running your life based upon poll results.

It is all about exposure time. The more you ride, the bigger your chances are that you are going to get hit. Then again, some people never get hit.

1. 1 year into an 8 year bike messenger career. Head on by a van that ran a red light. Rebuilt my shoulder with pins and hardware.

2. 3 years after the first one by a driver that ran a redlight. Flew up in the air and down on the windshield. No injuries except for a few scrapes on my knee.

3. 4 years after the 2nd; on my way to the messenger office and sideswiped by a driver who didnt signal a right turn. Decided to give up messengering after this one. Not too hurt, but banged up a bit. The driver tried to run but I always have a pen and paper handy. The police tracked him down and arrested him.

4. 4 years after the 3rd; riding (for fun) on 9W in the left hand lane to turn towards the GWB. Car came up behind me and nailed me from behind at 40-50mph. I went flying a good 30-40 feet. Really banged up this time, but nothing was broken.

Call me lucky or crazy, I still ride my bike to work everyday and every chance I get on the weekend.
You're a hardy soul blessed by the bicycle gods & goddesses!velocity

We love cycling, or we wouldn't be spending so much time on this board when cooped up at work or with a little time to spare, and come hell or high water we're getting on our bikes and spinning.
Did you ever sue?tronracer

I got a fair chunk of change out of the drivers each time. I am not retiring tomorrow or anything. If you want to make money, this is not the way to do it. Plus full replacement on everything that was damaged.

The last one was the worst as far as rehab goes. It ruined the peak of my early season training and totally offset my training schedule.

I would have taken no money and no accidents for an unhindered riding career.

Wow. I got hit not too long ago, and it never really occured to me to sue anyone. I've never been a big proponent of our lawyer intense society. My bike has been replaced already, and I'm happy about that. Just got news today that I have nerve damage in my foot. I guess I already knew that, but the doc hit it home. I don't know quite what to think of the nerve damage though. I make my living with my body still, although not a paid athlete anymore. I guess I'm just rambling from the news.

and I have bills to pay that are related to the accident, someone is going to pay. It sure as hell wasnt going to be me.

I made my living on my bike. When that was down, I couldnt make a living. I was a lawyers dream client.
what kind of nerve damage?ET

Were you given any names (e.g. tarsal tunnel, a peripheral nerve, etc.)? Where is the pain and what are the symptoms?

I wasn't given names by my doc. No real pain, just strange feelings in my foot. There is a shocking sensation when I tap my foot or land on the ball of my foot. It goes out from my second metatarsal. Started riding again two weeks ago. Sometimes I get numbness under the ball of the foot when riding as well. It feels numb or detached sometimes as well. Kind of hard to describe really. It's something I hope isn't going to affect my proprioception and balance in my other endevors.. That's what really bugs me. Nerves can regenerate though. :)
what kind of nerve damage?ET

Could be entrapment of the medial plantar nerve. You want to make sure you don't get a nervy type feeling of hot/cold symptoms and skin color changes, as that could be RSD/CRPS (sometimes caused by trauma), requiring, among other things, nerve block treatments in your back, and the sooner the better. Don't hesitate to post back if your symptoms change or become more defined.
thats why you shouldn't settle until you know stuff like thatColnagoFE

injuries often appear much later than the accident and if you settle right away you can be in for some big medical bills if something comes up.
hit by car isn't always a "head on"...some just grazed (nm)ColnagoFE

In about '84, I had a guy make a right turn into a parking lot in front of me, sending me over the hood of his Oldsmobile. There was no way I could avoid it and I could tell it wasn't going to be too bad, so I really played it up. I let out a big yell when I went into the right fender and started rolling around on the hood like a mackerel on the deck of a beer-soaked fishing boat. I rolled all the way across to the left side, landed on me feet, and flopped backwards onto the driveway. Dude had his license for about a month and was in his mom's car and literally pissed his pants. I ended up with a tacoed front wheel and a lot of scrapes on the leather soles of my Sidis. The kid's mom's insurance company paid for a new wheel and a good going over for my bike at the shop. Life was a lot more fun in the '80s.

So take it with a grain of salt. And if it includes light taps, it's even less meaningful (unless that's what you're interested in).

I don't usually bother to answer "Have you Ever" threads when the answer is "no."

Unless it is the "I Never" game and there is beer involved.
I was 12 when I was grazed. "Ever" in a question covers alot nmPdxMark

I don't know what would motivate anyone to lie. I was hit by a guy who passed me, then slowed and turned right. I smacked into the right front quarter panel and rolled over the hood. Fortunately I was wearing a backpack with work clothes and landed on it. No damage to the bike (knocked the handle bars askew, but just loosened the handle stem). His hood had a big dent in it, but it appeared he was too much in shock to make a big deal out of it.
Yeah, what is up with those morons?bigdave

They have NO depth perception... they are going 40 when they are even with you, pull ahead 30 feet, then slow to 15 and turn right in front of you. I've nearly T-boned cars thanks to that move.

All they have to do is put the brakes on 10 yards sooner, slide in behind and turn unimpeded.

I swear, drivers are more and more clueless these days.

PS -- I responded to the poll because I was hit... in a park. An older couple was tooling along, then decided to pull into a parking spot without signaling. Same deal... I didn't get too mad because they were totally shaken by the whole thing, and they were old. Probably too old to be on the road, but I was not about to ream them out. Wheel was tacoed, I was bruised and scraped up good, but nothing broken. The difference between then and now was me probably being in their blind spot, and the folks now who know full well I'm there, but do it anyway.
Agreed... but I ran into a car... so wasn't I hit by a car?PODIUMBOUNDdotCA

jk... but when I was 3 I did ride into my grandpas truck! Then last year I got pushed off the road by a car... can hardly remember the next hour. Not fun.

But its hard to believe over 500 of 2000 people have been hit by cars.

Cheers (to not getting hit by cars),
