Use a 9 speed. The 8 speed cassette will work on the 9 speed hub, but not the 9 on an 8 speed hub. If you crash on the derailler, you will probably need to upgrade to 9 speed anyway(I did) because Campy does support 8 speed anymore. The 9 speed hub will make it easier.

I can use the 8 speed cassette with a nine speed hub?

I've been considering upgrading to 9 speed, but don't have the $$ right now. I do actually have a spare 9 speed Mirage hub.

None of my 8-sp cassettes will work on a 9. You can leave a cog off the 9 cass first generation and run it on a 8 sp system. The splines and carriers are way different

WWCyclery on Ebay often has brand new 8 speed hubsets and singles for sale. Check them out. They have lots of campy small parts too!
