Shimano STI Shifters How to use ??bollard

I am borrowing a european model Cannondale road bike and the STI levers are confusing me. I can shift up and down with the chain on the big ring using the right hand sti and brake lever but I can't for the life of me work out how to get the chain onto the smaller front ring ???? Please help a newbie.

On the lefthand shifter, you bring the brake lever inward to go up to the big ring and the small shift lever inward to go back to the small ring. If you're on the big ring, one click of the small lever should move the chain down to the small one. Going back up to the big ring should happen with one smooth, firm push inwards on the brake lever.
Hope this helps.

Look at the picture. I hope it will help.

*Note about front derail shifting technique: when you are shifting front derail, always hold pedalling for a moment, then make shift (up or down), then continue with pedalling. This ensures smooth shifting.
