What's a good road bike in the $800.00-$1k range?eric the red

This is my first time in here and I'm sure this has been covered before...I want to buy a good road bike for between 800.00-1000.00 for recreational road riding maybe 100 miles/week max. I have access to Bianchi, Trek, Giant, Schwinn, Cannondale, Specialized, Fisher, Klien, Kona, Haro and Jamis in my little town in Western Oregon. I would prefer a fairly stiff frame and am '5-10" 175. Any suggestions??

Most of the brands you mentioned make excellent stuff. I personally like Trek. However, Cannondale, Specialized, Giant, and Bianchi are great as well. Kleins are sweet, however, I doubt you will get one in that price range.
With that said, you might want to shop by component group. Definitely, go for Shimano 105. If possible you might find Shimano Ultegra, perhaps, on a Schwinn since I think they are doing their bankruptcy thing again. Don't let that scare you though - great deals to be had - might even be a bragaining chip.
You might want to check out www.PerformanceBike.com. I am one of their buyer's club ($20 a year gets you 10% off orders) and the other day they had a nice Aluminum frame with Shimano 105 group for $900 - not bad. Their guarantee is great, so if you crack the frame in its lifetime I expect they would replace it.
Go to the bike shop and see what is the best deal. Post it here and we'll talk again.
Best of Luck

now you have 4 cents. Here are my thoughts after making lots of mistakes and getting some experience under my belt.

Look at the Jamis Ventura. $800.00 before you start negotiating.
