Fork race question(2 posts)

I have a couple of forks that I want to be able to swap back and forth (just until I figure out which one I like the most) without removing and installing the fork race each time. It seems like most of the races are pretty much the same also, so I was wondering if I could just pick up another fork race and install it on the second fork. This would let me keep the same headset installed and just change the fork back and forth. Is this doable or will I get into trouble by using a fork race that may not be specific to my headset?

thanks in advance

Your best bet is to install a crown race from the same brand/model. If the crown race from some other head set happens to work, you just got lucky. Before I did this, I would take some very careful measurements of each race to be certain that they were compatible, and I would carefully assemble the HS with each fork and feel for any differences in the way the fork turned. I know this is for just a short term test, but if you got the wrong crown race in there, you could at a minimum damage the HS, and possibly (though unlikely) damage the head tube.
