What's the formula for rating climbs?ridgerider

Climbs in the Tour de France (and a lot of other bike races, too) are rated on a five point scale, from 4 (not so steep) to HC (haute categorie, or awfully darn steep!) Is there a formula based on length of climb, grade, elevation change, etc? If someone knows it or can point me to it, I'd be grateful.

grade = rise over run

feet rise (vertical) divided by feet run (horizontal)
See the "grade" thread below (nm)JL

I thought the calculation of category place more importance on grade along with length rather than primarily on vertical feet (meters) climbed. Yes, the komcycling stuff does indicate grade is a factor, but more of a secondary factor with the main factor being vertical ascension.

Now you've gone and made me want to waste time to try and figure out where I saw that category stuff... Thanks...
