He is buying his first road bike after being a mountain biker for several years. Here is the issue: he is considering a Giant OCR 3 (I think that is the right model) with Sora parts and a compact aluminum frame. I am trying to steer him towards a good steel frame (I think he would ride more often and farther with a more forgiving bike) and maybe Tiagra parts (so he can upgrade easily and have the better shifters that come Tiagra and up). I just think a compact, aluminum frame won't be ideal for someone used to a long-travel full suspension bike. Any suggestions in the $700-800 range? I know used is an option as well, I am keeping an eye on the usual classified sections for a good deal, but ideally he wants a new bike.

Thanks-

Cross, so he can go out on single track if he wants to.
