Hey, Cannondale: Stop whining about the TourNiwot

The guys who run Cannondale can't stop whining about the TdF's decision to exclude Saeco after Simoni tested positive for cocaine and was forced out of the Giro. See the latest whine at

Hey, Cannondale, here's the deal: You changed the entire character of the Saeco team this year solely because you wanted everyone to see your bikes on TV in the Tour de France, and, as it turns out, to the detriment of the team's overall performance. You told Cipollini you didn't want him anymore, and then he wins Milan-San Remo, Ghent-Wevelgem, and six stages in the 2002 Giro. You told Savoldelli you didn't want him either, and then he wins the 2002 Giro. Doh! You dumped Cipollini and Savoldelli because you wanted to build your team around Simoni in the hopes that Simoni, as a GC challenger, would get your Cannondales on American TV in the TdF.

And it did get Saeco a TdF invitation, but that blew up in your faces because Simoni turns out to have a fondness for cocaine. Don't whine, don't blame the TdF. Here's the deal, Cannondale. There's only one reason your team and your bikes are not on OLN every day this month:

You made the personnel decisions, boys, now you have to live with the consequences. STOP WHINING.

I don't know... they do have a point about other teams & riders curently in the Tour that have been involved in doping...
Not relevant....Niwot

Saeco-Cannondale was not dis-invited simply because they have a rider with a dope problem. That's the way they want to spin it, but it's not true. No one has ever said that Saeco was dis-invited because they had a drug scandal, and the Tour organizers have never said that every team with a dope-tainted rider should be excluded. Cannondale's spin is just a bunch of hogwash.

Saeco was invited in the first place only because Simoni was going to ride the Tour and because the organizers thought it would be good to have him there as a GC contender (especially with Ullrich not in the Tour this year). When Simoni could not participate in the Tour, because of his cocaine problem, the reason for inviting Saeco was gone, and so Saeco was dis-invited. Saeco did build their team around Simoni this year, and without him they wouldn't do much in the Tour anyway (as they didn't do much in the Giro without him).

Bottom line is, Saeco-Cannondale chose to build their team this year entirely around Simoni's GC chances. When Simoni blew up in their face, they had to live with the consequences of their personnel choices, the biggest consequence being not riding in the TdF.

So act like adults, guys, live with the consequences of your choices, and stop whining.

...that Simoni wasn't using the coke to get high. He just likes the way it smells. Now if the TdF organizers would just come to their senses....
