|Thanks for all your help in the past few days finding the right bike. I'm sticking to a size 52cm, no matter what. I've found a bike. Can you tell me if it is a good deal?
Specs: '97 Cannondale R500, less than 200 miles. Upgrades include CF OCLV fork; Shimano 600 components, mostly; Shimano SG Dura-Ace double crank (what's the "SG" stand for?). Buyer's asking $700.
I could buy a new Cannondale R400 with Sora parts for the same price. Are the upgrades worth the price? BTW, seller says this bike is worth over $1,000. Is he crazy or not? Thanks for the input.

|I'm not sure what the fork is, but if it has Shimano 600 it's not a new bike. Did it just sit in the garge never ridden? Why would he upgrade to a CF fork if he never rode it? Sounds kinda strange. The bike is definately not worth over 1000...I'd personally offer 300--maybe 400 tops depending on condition, but then again I'm not in the market for this type of bike now.|

|Check out e-bay Item # 1837469971, see if you think it's comparable. It closed about 3 weeks ago at $610.00 and this guys not incurring any e-bay charges or shipping.
The bikes not worth over a $1000.00 IMHO. Brand new 2002's R500s in my LBS are $999.00 before any dickering is done.
my 2 cents
|Shimano 600 components...Are they Ultegra or DA?||Tele_Pathic|

|The seller mentions the Shimano 600 components. He mentions the bike has a DA crankset and an Ultegra chain. The other specs, bb, fr. & rear der., shifters, are all Shimano 600. These aren't DA or Ultegra components, are they? He claims the bike would sell for $1,800 to $2,000 new, and that these components are the standard on Cannondale R1000's. I can't find any more info about the Shimano 600 components on the web. Can you help a newbie out? Thanks.

|Does the bike have STI shifters or are they downtube?|

|Again, what it would cost new is irrelevant because it's not new. Bicycles depreciate faster than Yugo's.|

|Sounds high. Used bikes aren't worth a whole lot and this ones 6 y/o. He may have spent 1000 bucks on it over the years but that doesn't mean it's worth that. I have over 2k invested in my 9 y/o Gios but I doubt I'd get any more than 1/3 of that if I tried to sell it.
IMO keep shopping. You can often find closeout deals from LBS or supergo.

|Sounds like the seller is trying to bs you into paying the $700. It's an eight speed drive train that compares to ultegra in today's standands. The SG I believe is for the shifting guide; helps the chain shift smoother. Not a big deal now of days, because they have it on all the mtb chainrings made by shimano.
He probably spend $1000 for the bike and bikes don't keep that resale value like my Honda Civic. I would only offer the guy about $400, because that seems reasonable Drivetrain may be worn quit a bit).
As for the R400 it's not too bad of a bike. Save up some money to do upgrades later. Cannondale dealers are starting to drop their 2002 models to get room for the 2003 models now. Maybe you can get a closeout on the R600 or R500 for the price you want to pay ($1199 for R600 maybe).
I got a Jekyll 800 for $300 off this pass month. Cannondale dealers are hurting on sales, so they're clearing out there inventory to make room for the new models. Two Cannondale dealers, in my area, are doing this now.

|He's blowing out all his 2002 models at least $150 to $200 least than what he was asking. I think he got the 2003 cannondales in June.

|I am not seeing a R1000 in Cannondales website. I just see the R900 and teh R2000. I think it is a little to high. At www.gvhbikes.com you can get a CAAD3 w/ full ultegra for 1225.|

|Unless the bike has 9 speed STI, it's too old to be worth that much. Don't settle for anything less, you'll regret it later.
You can get a new alumimum framed bike with 105 components from Colorado Cyclist for under $1000.

|Mysterious. In 1997, the Cannondale R500 came spec'd with RSX and retailed for about $700. I believe this is the old 2.8 frame ... very stiff though the CF fork may help.
What color is it? That year the R500 came in a blue/purple fade and a metallic green.
I'm puzzled why someone would buy a mid-level bike, put less than 200 miles on it over 5 years, but swap out for a bunch of upgraded components.
