I have started commuting (long)maximum15

Started the week of the 4th of July to get the feel of it. My work place was at 20% capacity last week so it was easy to get a feel for bringing the bike to my cube, changing clothes, getting a routine together in general. Continued thru this week (including Saturday and Sunday – rough week) and I am really liking this. The ride in to work in the mornings is exhilarating. Even in Florida, it is nice and cool at that time, and when I get to work, I feel absolutely fantastic. On the way home, I can get a nice long ride in if I like or I can make it quick and be home fast if I need to. Best of all, I don't feel the need to rush home to try and get a ride in before dark. I had planned to wait a few weeks before writing this – just to make sure I stuck with it, but I know I am. So far, three rides in the rain on the way home, which isn't too cool but is bearable. Tonight's ride prompted this posting as I worked to 11:30 pm tonight. To make the ride home, I tied two small flashlights to the bottom of the drops for headlights (always have a taillight on the bike). Thought I was in good shape until I walked the bike out the door and found it pouring rain again. If I can survive 17 hours of work and ride in the rain at night with flashlights, I can commute every day of the year. Anyway, I thought I would take a few minutes to post this while yet another wad of newspaper in the shoes soaks up some water and another adult dietary beverage disappears. I will post some thoughts on my experiences in a few weeks if others are interested in starting to commute and want to hear my experiences. And lastly, THANKS to all who have posted how they handle the office environment and commuting – your posts have been very helpful. Ken.
Cool! Keep it up!nmMiklos

I've been doing it off and on four years now. I like riding in light rain. There's a lot of good rain gear for bikers available as well as good night riding equipment. Keep it up, hope you become one of those folks who stays away from the gas station for weeks at a time. (5 weeks is my record, I'm sure there are folks out there who've gone longer.)
way to go! nmvelocity

and plan to leave it in the desk in case I need to make another after dark trip, which is quite possible. What I need to find now is some type of shoe cover to keep the feet dry when riding in the rain. I don't mind getting wet, but sure hate to soak those expensive Sidi shoes too many times.
try cheaper shoes for commutingvelocity

I like versatile shoes with a recessed cleat for commuting. This also eliminates the worry of damaging your good shoes. And, hey, you may, like me, find you like these shoes so much that you occasionally use them for your more casual rides too!
