Help me find new shoes, pleasejc66502

I'm in the market for new shoes. But, I live in a college town with one bike shop that's more of an outdoors/hiking store than anything. So trying on a variety of shoes is difficult.

For the past five/six years I've worn a pair of Carnac Virenque Replica. Good shoe and a decent fit but they are wearing out. The velcro doesn't velcro like it once did and they are generally just earing out.

I ride about 200 miles a week, fairly quick but I left my racing days behind after college.

I wear size 9.5 Nike Air Pegasus running shoes, which fit very well. My current Carnacs are size 42 and a bit snug in the toe box. I'd like a stiff, light well ventilated shoe. I'd like to spend under $200, and I'm not a fan of the multi-colored Euro-style shoes.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks
jc

Assuming that the Carnacs of 5-6 years ago were on a similar last to today's, I'm assuming you've got a pretty wide forefoot. You can get a roomy toebox in both Northwave and Pearl Izumi.

Folks may also steer you toward the Sidi megas, but I find them TOO wide, particularly in the heel. They just took the entire shoe and "super sized" it as far as I can tell... it didn't work for me.

I love them...I'm unable to wear a "normal" width shoe because invariably either the shoe blows apart or I get really bad corns and callouses. I agree that the heel is a bit wider than I would normally like in a walking shoe, but then again if I'm walking in these, there is something VERY wrong. I have found that the tiny bit of extra room allows me to wear a slightly thicker (more comfortable) sock, smartwool being my favorite. Hope my two cents helps even a little bit...btw...the SIDI Megas are only available in black so you don't have to worry about Euro colors...I've also found their buckles to be very effective and lasting. Good luck

I have a pair of SIDI Genius 4 megas in silver lorica with black mesh. Best purchase I ever made bike-wise (well, those AND a good saddle). I love them, and for what it's worth I don't find them too wide in the heel. I have a wide forefoot and a narrow heel, and they fit fine. Hope that helps.

There are some very good shoes at about $100. If you want a shoe that has a wide toe box try the Specialized Comp Road. I find that this shoe fits a wide variety of people and it incorporates most of the fit, finish, and features of the Pro Road at 2/3 the price. A tip on fit would be to go to a shoe store and be measured on a Branock device. A fairly accurate conversion from U.S. to European sizes can be found at http://www.sidiusa.com/tech/images/shoe_size.gif

I bought a pair because the "normal" Sidi's were too narrow and I couldn't find Sidi Mega's to try on. The Carnac's I found had the wide forefoot I needed with a decent narrow heel. They don't seem too multicolored either (Black/Silver/Yellow). The Comete's I bought were $179 at my LBS. You can find decent deals online too.

Happy riding.
