|Just Called OLN To Complain.....||Fausto|
Jul 8, 2002 8:46 AM
|I just called OLN in Stamford CT (203) 406-2500 to complain about Bill Patrick. Stated that his comments during the bumpers ( intro's and outro's ) trivialized the Tour and were offensive to anyone who understands cycling. The OLN guy thanked me for my call and said that they were getting other complaints. I asked if it were possible to "reel him in " and was told that they will pass along the feedback.
If your upset with this loser, let OLN know.

|is simply reduce the amount of lead in he does. But I suspect there isn't anything they can do as I am sure he has to fill the air time until the other TV companies are ready for phil and paul as well. What they should have done is get somebody with some cycling knowledge to do the lead-ins/outs. Never understood the practice of bringing the speedvision guys over...
|so he's just a speedvision racing car guy?!!!||ishmael|

|If thats true get him out of there, that explains it. And if you cant get bob again find the oldest and dirtiest road racer out there who can tell it like it is. I'm keeping my eye on that guy, one slip and I'm callin' it in.|

He's a former pro (rode both the Giro and Vuelta in the 80s I believe). He's extremely media-savvy - did some really good work for ESPN in Tours past. I think he would fit in well with Team Phil and Paul.
Speaking of ESPN, Bill Patrick is a SportCenter alum and just like most of those desk jockies, he's a talking head who thinks he's clever (and he's not).
I don't know what it is with American TV networks - they always seem to assign the wrong guy to help cover the Tour (Barry Tompkins (the boxing guy), Adrian "Clueless" Karstens, Bob "Muskrat Head" Varsha and now Mr. Bill Patrick).
For what it's worth.

|during the giro, phil and paul went straight into and out of commercials. i don't see why they can't do it here as well. i assume british tv is broadcasting their commentary as well, so it's not like they stopp calling the race while oln is on commercial break.|

|Does nobody remember the ESPN half hour daily Tour shows, with Adrian Karstan providing not just intros, but FULL color commentary ("Sprinting is just like the quarterback sneak, the whole team sets up so their fearless leader can get over the line...").
OLN might not be perfect, but it is the best TdF coverage I have ever seen in this country, and I'm willing to cut them some slack.

not complaining about the lack of coverage at all. However, I really did like Bob's perspective on racing and miss him during the Tour. yeah, Adrian was awful.....

|...that I was unhappy with the coverage, just my thoughts on how to improve it. I am sooooo thankful for OLN and their coverage of cycling. I was just pointing out why the lead-ins/outs may be as they are.
I love OLN, after the Vuelta, I get the Louis Vuitton Cup! I love watching the America's Cup and I have been on a sailboat like twice in my entire life! No sailor here but the AC is definitely cool, despite the gap in the realities ($$$) of that crowd and me!

|If so I kinda like it. I love watching sports other than the usual American fare.|

|Thanks for that! Just sent OLN a note asking them to quiet Mr. Patrick down a bit!
I thought it was just me noticing the change in coverage. No need to try and make it "slick"...the cycling is slick enough.

|OLN really sucked this morning when they cut to commercials with 5Km to go. At that point in time no commercials should be allowed! I know they have bills to pay but they could have thrown up one of those annoying banners hawking a product on the top left corner of the screen. As for Bill Patrick, i aint got a problem with his commentary.|

|Offensive enough to get on the phone to HQ? Hmmm... I must have missed something. More likely, my brain must have decided to ignore him. He is just filler between commentary and commercial.
I remember they had an American helping out on the Giro in 99(?). When the camera focused on a rear deraileur for a few seconds he chimed in and said something like, "We're looking at a rear derailuer... blah, blah, blah... Some of these bikes have 8 even 9 gears on them"
He seemd to learn as he went and improved in the later stages.

|Here is what I mean by offensive -
"Will Lance keep the jersey for the next three weeks? Stay tuned and find out!"
He also called one of the crashes yesterday a "crackup".
If you understand profesional cycling (which I'm sure everyone who reads this board, does), such idle banter I find not only to insult my intelligence, but offensive.
BTW, during my call, I prefaced how wonderful I thought they were to bring us all three grand tours. I was very complimentary and then very specific on my issues with the non-cycling commentator.

|You need to calm down a bit. I know alot about cycling and I don't find either of those statements offensive. What exactly do you find offensive? The first statement is perfectly valid and who cares if he calls a crash a "crack-up." Big freakin deal.|

|Offensive? I think you need some thicker skin about this issue. I feel fortunate that not only does OLN broadcast the Tour, but several times per day?
I suppose ALL HYPE trivializes whatever is being hyped... turn the sound off if you don't like it.
