So, I'm watching the bottom line on ESPN. The ticker reads about the Tour and how Bertogliati is ahead of Lance Armstrong. What? When did the Tour become Lance vs. the world? I hate how the Tour gets little coverage stateside. ESPN, where lots of folks get their sports fix I guess, when Lance eventually does not win the Tour, will make it sound like the greatest upset ever. But as long as he keeps stringing Tour victories up, Tiger Woods is the greatest athlete ever. Where is the balance? The guys on ESPN's PTI support Lance and his great victories. Do they give him air time? nope. Does Sportscenter? nope. Does Tiger get a camera crew while he practices putts? yes. I guess I'm angry at the media for not giving a great competitor his due. I feel it's slanted towards "popular" sporting events. I mean, how in the hell can Mike Tyson get coverage while Lance is practically invisible? I hope Lance wins again this year so I can look at the one Wheaties box he's on from 1999's win.

When you own a network then you get to run whatever you want to. These people are (probably) not idiots. They know what their audience wants, at least the majority of it.

There have been plenty of corporate flops. Odds are though, they know more than we do.

I was pretty attentive to ESPN over the weekend, and need to point out a few things.

1. While the ticker did tell how far Bertogliati was ahead of Lance, this is similar in form to when they give the golf leaderboard, and then say where Tiger is, regardless of whether he's on the leaderboard or not. They do this because most of the audience wants to know where the best player is at all times. The alternative, is that they say, "Bertogliati wins stage two" and no more. It is more interesting for most to know how Lance is doing.

2. The SportsCenter coverage of the prologue only mentioned Lance briefly, BUT they gave props to Levi Leipheimer and Tyler Hamilton in a regular-length segment, where Lance got the mention as their mentor.

3. The Tour de France is a marathon, not a sprint, ESPN knows what they're doing. If they give a blow-by-blow from day one, nobody will care by the end of the race. Look at what they do with World Cup Soccer- the first game, nobody really knew that the US even played. But as the Tournament got on, coverage got more and more in-depth.

Seems a bit presumptious to me...however true it is.
Armstrong is a good looking, charismatic guy, who is a nice guybill

with a great story besides. Why not use the hell out of him? He's the best thing to happen to road riding since, since, since, I don't know when.
