|What is the point of having Bill Patrick as an announcer for the TDF? Does he serve a legitimate purpose? I'm sure he's a nice guy and all, but he is not very cycling savy and seems to contribute little to this venue.
Does OLN honestly believe that he brings something positive to the broadcast, something more, that Phil & Paul aren't doing or couldn't do?
Does a "Bill Patrick", or "Bob Varsha", etc. contribute something to the coverage that Bob Roll, Phil Liggit, or Paul Sherwin can't?

|They should at least have Bob Roll do a muttering frenchmen commercial.|

|I agree. Patrick contributes about as much (or as little) as Varsha did, and they even sound alike. Uggh. I felt at times like Varsha was trying to impress us with his French pronunciations last year. Shut up and throw the call over to the Pros, already.
I don't know a thing about TV production, but last year my theory was that Varsha was the OLN cut-away and cut-in voice, while Phil and Paul's race call might have been used by other English speaking broadcasters in addition to OLN (have no idea who, but it's just a W.A.G.) I don't recall Phil and Paul ever "speaking" with Varsha during an actual race call, which is why I thought that might have been the case.
However, there was some on air exchange between Bill Patrick and Phil and Paul AFTER today's stage, but I don't recall if they spoke to each other on the air DURING the racing.
Anyway, I'm just advancing an uninformed theory. I'll gladly stand corrected if someone knows the real scoop.
In any event, they had a real winner with Phil, Paul and Bobke for the Giro. Wish we had more of that.

|Phil and Paul do all the race calls for the Commonwealth plus the U.S. as well.
They need someone to do the cutaways. Varsha was better than the current talking head, but he's committed with all the motor sports stuff on Speedvision this year and probably wouldn't have been able to commit a month for a bike race.
Hey, count yourself lucky; at least we don't have Adrian Carstens or "Duffy" (D. Duffield) doing the cutaways! At least the current dude doesn't make endless inane comments just to fill dead air. Frankie is getting better at working in front of the camera too, good on him.

|I am enjoying Frankie, the racers seem to respond to him. I hope he continues to develop, maybe he can be the cutaway guy.|

|Yeah, her in a tight yellow or polka dot jersey and I would forget all about Paul and Phil!

|I read in Cycling Weekly that Phil and Paul were to be commentating on ITV which is a UK tv station, so I think that is why they need the 'colour commentator' and I agree he totally sounds like Varsha|
