Who here rowed before they rode?Cheezhead

Just wondering, because both sports stress lower body endurance and strength, so it seems like a natural conversion. At least it was for me, I rowed for 2 years at villanova university before getting my road bike. Anyone else here had/have a rowing career as well??

I rowed in HS and then at Georgetown. Great sport but I needed to take some time off to do something else for a few years. Cycling is the perfect alternative.

5K erg tests were the worst! 2K was ok cuz you could go balls-out for 6+ minutes and be done. But 5K was just hard and looooong! Ergs are definitely the one part of rowing that I do not miss! :)

Is that the Schuylkill there in the background? I see the pic is hosted at Villanova, so i'm guessing it is. Fond memories- i rode the Kelly drive trail (up one side and back the other) almost daily for 2 years.

That's the Schuylkill alright! The pic is the medal shot of my boat after we won the Dad Vail's Freshman Heavyweight 8 in 2000. I'm the last rower on the right. So many great memories....

You know i think i actually rode by there at some point during that regatta! I went to undergrad at penn and was recruited at orientation to row, but the fact was that at 5'11" and about 230 i still had "football muscle" and not "crew muscle" if that makes sense. I never stuck with crew but enjoyed getting that brisk air on the river each day! Congrats on your placings!

I love rowing!!! Rowed for VCRC as a junior, took this last year off and I'm starting up again to row for Uvic this fall.

And yes, I hate ergs.
Still rowin'!empacher6seat

The reason I started cycling is because I needed a way to get my ass to the lake and back every morning!!

I rowed for VCRC as a junior, took this year off because I wanted to focus on school for my first year of college, and next year I'll be rowing for the Uvic Vikes!

Yes, I fear ergs too. The only people I know who don't are all around 6'5", 220lbs and pull around 6 minutes flat! lol

Rowing is still my primary sport. Plenty of places to rowing out here in Seattle.

Biking is to spend time with my spouse.

Ergs are just another tool, like weights and running. Then again "ergs don't float."

Back in the 80's, there were a lot of serious cyclists who rowed or tried out for Wisconsin Crew. Problem was Wisconsin didn't have lightweight crew and most cyclist fell in the middle to smaller weight range which at Wisconsin was anything under about 220!
Rowing, I sure miss waking up at 5 am every freakin day!I Love Shimano

Used to row stroke for the 4+ back in college.

Speaking of bikes and rowing....any of you get to try the Rowbike?
