This might be a silly question but I shall ask it since I do not know the answer. I have just replaced my old touring bike. I want to know if my new bike has the same or nearly the same gearing as far as the low end goes.

My old bike has a 24 sprocket front and 30 rear. The new bike has a 28 front and 34 rear. Which is lower? Thank you in advance.

Its just a ratio (without getting into gear inches): divide the front by the back and that will tell you how many times the wheel will turn per crank rotation. In your case, the difference is around 2% (with the old one being a bit lower). Hope this helps.

... and both of them belong on a mountainbike. What kinda hills you climbing in your neck of the woods, anyway?

I live in Southern Oregon. Lots of steep hills and lots of coastline. Thanks for the help.
