When I first read Doug's posting I replied with a few words then left the board. On reflection I thought that the reason there is so many postings about fit is because most people have a problems with an improperly fitted bike. Being no different than "most people", the day after Doug's posting I went for a Serotta sizing. One of the measurements is seat height. The recommended seat height for me is 84cm.

When I returned home, I measured the seat height on my Klein, it was at 86cm. I adjusted the seat and have been on a couple of rides. What an improvement.

Like "most people", I'm always the last to know what my problem is. I seem to know other peoples' problems better than my own.

There will be other adjustments to be made but this was a big correction. Also, I want to mention that I had been to two other LBS before Serotta and they did not pick up on the height discrepency.

The sizing was $60.00 well spent.

I never argued against setting your seatpost height correctly. In fact, I measure mine to the 8th of an inch and set it the same on all bikes.

My point is that bikes, as a whole, have a wide range of adjustability, including seatpost height, of course. Note that even with the Serotta fitting, you were not required to buy a new bike.

I don't know, Doug. I figure everything should get measured to AT LEAST within one sixteenth of an inch.

Any more than that, and you risk carpal tunnel syndrome, kidney failure, and of course all your reproductive organs will fall off.

Even if they're ovaries. ;-p

I got my last bike after getting a serotta fit kit done and still had to tweak the seat height and position a bit (seat height seemed a bit low after riding it for a while). it works pretty well but is not perfect. and if you get some bozo who doesn't know what they are doing you can be way off.
