I've been told it's possible. Somebody mentioned there is a pin or screw in the shifter that I need to adjust. Do I need a new derailleur?

You have to change the ratchet mechanism within the Ergo lever - they are interchangeable. It's fiddly but can be done otherwise Campy service centers can do the upgrade. The old rear mech should work, but you'll need to fit narrower jockey wheels to run the narrower chain. If you change mech, make sure that they are compatble as pre-2000 9 speed indexing is different to current versions. Finally, you'll need a new rear hub as the freehub body length is different.

at http://www.branfordbike.com. He did a set for me and they work fine. It cost something like $75 complete.
