Annoying clicking w/ Ultegrakg1

I recently got a new bike with Ultegra. It is a double in the front, and the rear cog is 12-25. The LBS that set the bike up for me seems to have done an excellent job and it works flawlessly with one exception -- I get a very annoying clicking coming from the front chain ring when I am on the small chain ring in the front and anything smaller than the 17 in the rear. The chain is not rubbing on the front der. I think the clicking is coming from the chain rubbing on the large ring.

The LBS tells me that it's normal and that I shouldn't be using 17 or less on the rear when I am in the small ring on the front anyway. Is the LBS right? Is there anything I can do to make these gear combinations work?

Thanks for your help.

Don't agree entirely with the LBS. I can see them saying small chainring, 12 cog will give problems, but not the 15, 14.
should be able to go down to these with no problems. a good thread with a similar problem which turned out to be a chain line problem cured mostly by a 2mm spacer on the BB. Can you actually see the chain rubbing on the large ring? This is what the other person experienced. I believed he said Shimano was aware of this problem. I would go to the archives to check this out. It was a recent thread.

good luck

That clicking is usually only normal on the last 1 or 2 cogs. For the 17 to be rubbing there is probably some sort of frame alignment, crank installation, or bottom bracket length problem.

I had a similar problem with Ultegra on my new Kestrel. It turned out that the BB had loosened a bit after a few rides. Once tightened the noise stopped.
