Do Women Wear Bibs?(6 posts)

Do Women Wear Bibs?MP
Jun 25, 2002 8:08 PM
I'm planning to get some new riding shorts for my wife for her birthday. I've been wondering if there are any women out there who prefer bibs over conventional shorts. Do they rub sensitive areas too much? She is 5'11" and likes Castellis.

She gave hers to my son. She found the straps annoying around her breasts and peeing to be too much trouble.

The distribution of bibs vs. shorts on the women's team I race for is about 60/40 shorts to bibs. The ladies (like me) who prefer bibs do so because we don't like elastic cutting us in half. Unless you're really skinny and/or built like a guy, the elastic thing is very annoying. I wear bibs exclusively and have ever since my team manager made a mistake on our team kit order the first year I raced (ordered me bibs instead of shorts). I was wary of them at first but I'll never go back. I personally think the bib apron keeps the chamois in place better so it doesn't bunch up and/or feel like wearing a saggy diaper, as some of the thicker chamois tend to do.

Also, most women's jerseys are cut very short in the waist, and the ladies who wear the elastic waist shorts with these tend to show about 2" of sunburn line when riding in the drops (it's not actually plumber's butt, but it's not cool).

The gals who prefer shorts don't like bibs because of having to get undressed for nature breaks, and some don't care for the added layer of binding from the strap / apron "up there". Although my teammate with the, shall we say, most picturesque profile is a bib gal.

Let her try them on and send back the one she doesn't like.

I like my shorts, tho have never tried bibs. I don't have any trouble with jersey ride-up in the back or binding around the waist. But then even in my dreams I can't imagine being 5'11". I was playing hooky when they passed out the height genes.

Hope she has a happy birthday and she appreciates your thoughfulness. I have been getting bike stuff from my husband (and kids) for birthdays and Xmas for a couple years. Last birthday was the best, my own workstand!

My husband just bought me a pair of Louis Garneau riding shorts for my birthday (the purplish-color ones -- I think it's called Dolphin or Daulphin??). I've never had bibs, because I've always thought they'd be a bother and hot (so I cannot comment on those). My husband also says they're hot when we go on our longer rides. I am also a HUGE fan of Castellis (especially my gold Paolo Pezzo pair and new blue Elin shorts). Castelli is so expensive, though, so he thought he'd get me a pair of Garneaus and a jersey (the Garneaus were the only colored shorts besides black other than the Castellis that he could find). I think the pad is wonderful and is very comparable to my Castellis. If your wife likes Castelli's, then I'd bet she'd like the Louis Garneau (and you can get them in a pretty color -- something besides drab black). Just my opinion....Hope it helps! :) (Oh, he got them at
