|NR Blow Torch/ Shimano Flight Deck interference?||ms|

|On Saturday, I did the Mojave by Moonlight Century. My Shimano Flight Deck (wireless) was working fine (as it has since it was installed 18 months ago) until I turned on my new Night Rider Blow Torch. Soon after I turned on the light, the computer stopped functioning. After a while, I would get some information, but it clearly was wrong (for example, it recorded my maximum speed at 105 mph). I am assuming that there was some interference between the light and the computer. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any way to cure the problem?|

|How close is your battery to your mag pick up. Does it work fine when your lights are off? I bet your batter causes interferance with the mag pick up|

|The battery was in my water bottle cage, which is fairly close to the mag pick up. Because it was dark, I was not able to play around with turing off the light and then observing the competer -- I plan to play around with it when I go home from work today.|

|I have the Blow Torch and a Vetta wireless computer. If the light (the housing containing the lamp) is too close to the computer it causes the computer to have erratic and off-the-wall readings, much like yours. The problem was cured when I moved the light housing away from the computer. I believe that the lamp puts out a considerable amount of electromagnet interference but it apparently has a range. All I had to do was to move the light about 1 cm. I am no expert, but I think it is the lamp itself and not the battery that is the cause of the interference (I also have the tail-light, that runs off the battery and when it is on, there is no problem with interference).

|I've run a wireless FlightDeck for the last year. I also use a Light and Motion Solo Logic with the battery in the dt bottle cage and the light on the left side of the bars and experienced no problems with the FlightDeck. |
As the battery is not that different from the NR, I doubt the battery, which emits little EMI and is not that close to the transmitter, is creating the intereference. Also, since the light mount is made to be mounted on the right side of the stem so that the light is directly in the middle, mounting on the left side places the lamp housing that much further from the head unit of the FD.
As Poulidor notes, it's probably caused by EMI from the lamp/power cable . Interestingly enough, I recently changed front light setups to a small 3W light which can either flash or be used in a non-flash mode. It runs on one N battery and this small lamp causes interference with the head unit. No MPH, cadence, mileage, etc. I've moved it further away and it still causes interference so I'll probably try some aluminum foil/coke can inside the housing and see if shielding helps.
It's annoying how one advance, wireless, is canceled by something as simple as a head light. However, it's not enough to send me off looking for a hard wired mount.
